DU Northcoast Classic – July 10
This tournament is a one day event this year. The main event is a 100 class shoot with either a 9:00am or 1:00pm start time ($100 entry). There will also be a non-registered ‘Camo-Class fun shoot’ available from 10-4pm. The Camo Class Event will be a 50 target event and will feature layout blinds, boat blinds, decoys, 3 shot situations, poison birds (don’t shoot the hen) and many other unique presentations ($60, ammo included. $50 for any main event entrant). You do not have to participate in the main event to do the camo class. Lunch included for all entrants (Main event and/or Camo Class) For more info, call 330-725-2097 or Gary Pennington at 330-825-1942.
Ohio Sporting Clays Championship
August 6-8 – The state championship will run from Friday through Sunday. A preliminary event (European Rotation) and Subgauge course (European Rotation) will be run on Friday. The Subgauge course will also be available on Saturday (European Rotation). Saturday and Sunday will showcase 100 targets/day (squadded.). More info can be found at www.ohiosportingclays.com. This is typically the largest sporting clay event in Ohio every year.
Anyone interested in helping out for the state championship, please contact Shawn Spindel at (330)635-9824. Friday is the day that is most needed. Scorekeepers, drivers, and relief personnel are all needed.
September 18th – The Charity shoot
The 21st annual Charity Shoot will be held on Saturday, September 18th. This shoot is a great time for all who attend. The event is a registered NSCA Class Shoot, but the emphasis is more on helping others than competing. The Kidney Foundation of Medina County will be the benefitting organization. Please visit their website at www.mckf.org
In the past, this shoot has raised anywhere from $3000-$13,000 for a local charity. This money is raised through station sponsorships and all shoot proceeds being donated by the club and shooters. The cost of the shoot is $75.00. A special prize drawing is always held and includes tons of great prizes including a Hill 'n Dale Club membership. Shooters must be present to win in the drawing. Flight times are at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. Please call to reserve a spot or squad (330)725-2097.
As you can imagine, any donations of potential merchandise and/or cash are welcome and necessary to make a shoot like this a success. If you would like to be a station sponsor or donate some drawing items, please stop in or call and let us know. Again, all shooters are welcome and encouraged to participate in this fun day of shooting
Fall Members Sporting Clay League
There will be an 8 week sporting clay league beginning on August 24th and ending on October 23rd The format will be 50 targets on a new course each week, either the woods course or the field course. The course will be ready to shoot by Noon on Tuesday of each week. Only the top 6 scores of the 8 weeks will count for the overall total so you can miss 2 weeks without dropping out of contention. There will not be a league course set up for the week of September 14-19 due to the charity shoot that weekend.
Entry for the league is $35.00 and includes the awards banquet and clambake on October 23rd . Your league round is $16.00 for the 50 targets and your first score on that course counts toward your league score. Targets will be scored by your other squad members. If you shoot the league without any other shooters, someone else must be present to verify your score such as a Hill 'n Dale Club employee. Prizes will be awarded for Master-E class, ladies, and hunters. 1st place only for under 3 in class, 1st and 2nd for under 10 in class, and 1st-3rd for over 10 in a class. Please sign up at the lodge.
Subgauge Saturday – September 25th
Before the hunting seasons get into full swing, there will be a members’ subgauge shoot. Bring
out your 20, 28, or .410 and shoot the course on September 25th. Cost will be $35.00(automatic $5 lewis class) for the first 100 target event and $30 if you would like to enter a second or third gauge. The hoot will begin at 9am (European rotation) and scores must be handed in by 3:00pm. A few loaner guns and tubes will be available if you would like to try them.
Halloween Blast – Members only – October 30th
This will be a fun shoot for members only. There will be some funny, spooky
and downright scary targets out there. Some poison birds and different colored targets,
along with flying fruit and pumpkins will make the course extra special. There will be
plenty of other surprises out there as well. Shooting will begin at 9:00am and we hope to have all
shooting completed by 3:00pm. More info will follow as we concoct up this recipe for fun.
3 Shot Members Fun Shoot – November 13th
Fun for single barrel shooters! Break out your pump guns and autoloaders. Presentations will include True Triples, True pairs followed by singles on Report, maybe a long single target that might take 3 whacks to bring it down, 3 targets on report, etc, etc. We will have a couple of loaner guns available if you would like to try this out. Lots of fun. Cost is $35.00/100 targets ($5.00 automatic to lewis class, European start.)
Lockers
There are a few lockers available in the lodge for members to store shooting essentials, etc. If you have any interest in having a locker in the lodge, please let us know. The fee for the lockers is $20.00/ year.
After hours Check-in Procedures
If you will be using the club before 9am or after 5pm or on Mondays, we ask that you sign in at the check-in counter (White sliding door) in the barn at the Poe road entrance. The only exception to this is for members who have arranged to shoot sporting clays with a controller or shooting skeet/trap (all shooting must be concluded by 7:30pm as always.)
It is important that we know who is on the grounds at all times and the check-in counter is a quick way for us to know who is here. Without an accurate log, the chance for an unnecessary disturbance of your time fishing or camping is increased. We would also appreciate it if all car passes are displayed prominently on the dash of your vehicle while parked away from the main parking areas (i.e. at all fishing ponds and lakes.)
If you plan to camp out or be at the club after dark, the front office needs to know the day before so the activity is logged in the main office book. Any activity after dark must be approved by the front office. Please call (330)725-2097 to make your request.
Hunting
Hunting Season
Hunting season will begin on October 1st for any hunting and corporate members. Pheasants, Chukar Partridge, and Hungarian Partridge will be available to hunt this season. Hunts are available Tuesday through Sunday at either 9:00am or 1:30 pm. Minimum birds released are 5 on Weekdays and 10 on Weekends. All hunts include a guide and club dog plus cleaning, packing, and freezing of all harvested birds. If you or one of your guests has a dog that you would like to hunt with, please bring them out.
Please call at least 2 days in advance so we can line up a guide for your hunt. The holiday weeks (Thanksgiving and Christmas) typically book up quickly so make your plans early please. At the time of reservation, please let us know how many people will be hunting (4 max. per field), number and species of birds to release, whether or not you have a dog, and whether or not you would like to have a meal before or after the hunt at the clubhouse.
Beginning in January, we will begin to hold some driven pheasant hunts. Please watch for these dates in future newsletters and on the bulletin board. If you would like to book a private driven pheasant hunt, please contact us and we will arrange it (75 bird minimum). Stray bird hunts are also available when fields are open. The cost is $25.00 per hunter plus a $2.50 cleaning charge per harvested bird.
We look forward to another great season.
Thanksgiving Hunts
The club is closed for Thanksgiving day except for morning hunts. We will offer these spaces on a first call, first reserved basis. Please call early if you are interested in a Thanksgiving day morning hunt (1 available). Because of the holiday and holiday pay, the minimum number of birds released will be equal to 20 pheasants per field.
Note: reservations for this date can not be cancelled if we are unable to fill with another party.
Gil & Vicki Ash- OSP Shooting School June 25-27
Gil & Vicki will be visiting the club for the first time this June. We are looking forward to having them. Along with the clinic, there will also be an evening seminar on Friday night complimented with dinner and drinks.
If you want to learn how to shoot, why you miss, and how to correct your mistakes, you'll want to attend a clinic offered by OSP. Each clinic is open to students of varying skill levels and is tailored to the needs and goals of the participants. $385.00/day. Limited openings on Friday and Saturday. Space available on Sunday.
June 25th 6:00 - Seminar….How to Tell if Your Problem is Mental or Mechanical
During this seminar Vicki and Gil will discuss the mechanical and mental game of sporting clays and the common pitfalls they see in shooters of all levels. They will discuss all shooting methods, their advantages and disadvantages, the components of lead, what creates consistency mechanically and the most common misconceptions about mental performance. The sessions usually last 1.5 to 2 hours but if you get Gil going there is no telling when Vicki will be able to stop him. They require all participants submit at least one question that they would like to be addressed during the session and questions from the audience will be encouraged throughout the session.
Vicki and Gil have written 9 books and produced 6 instructional DVD’s about sporting clays and have given seminars all over the country. They have witnessed since 1992 in excess of 8 million shotgun shells fired at clay targets and game birds. They average about 1750 students each year and have taught in excess of 18,000 hours EACH since becoming professional shooting instructors. Their seminars are both informative and humorous and interaction with the audience is a big part of what makes their seminars so unique. They will have prepared topics but if the audience wants to explore any aspect of shotguning, competitive, recreational, or hunting they have the experience to handle any and all topics.
Cost for the seminar is $75 (US) and participants will receive a copy of their book “You Gotta Be Out of Your Mind” and their DVD “The Three Routines of sporting Clays” ($90 value) and dinner and beverages will be included. For details on time and dates and locations (Hill ‘n Dale Club – June 25th - 6:00) check with Ronda at www.ospschool.com or call her at 800 838 7533.
Club Projects
There are a couple projects in the works on the property that you may notice over the next few months. The lake by Pavilion #4 needs some repairs to the dam. We will be increasing the height of the dam later this summer and also widening the spillway substantially. Please pardon the exposed dirt and construction during excavation. The gravel road leading to the pavilion will have to be reworked at the conclusion of the project, along with reseeding a section of the area. Please call us before you plan to use Pavilion #4 for any gathering. Work will likely occur in late summer.
There will also be some selective logging done on some of the club property over the next year or so. The logging will help enhance our hardwood stands and all best management practices will be used to ensure that the forest benefits from the logging. The club is working with a forestry consultant from The Wilderness Center (Wilmot, OH) on this project. There should be minimal, if any, interruption in regular activities for club members.
